ABOUT

Founded in 2018 as a passion project by four friends, Analog Forever Magazine has become the world’s premier journal of contemporary film and analog photography. Though we have grown substantially, our mission statement hasn’t changed:

We aim to provide a global audience to established and emerging photographers who use analog processes and techniques for their photographic work by giving them a voice via a biannual print photography journal, online features and interviews, book reviews, and online exhibitions.

Now that we have published 8 Print Editions, 100+ articles online, and years of online group exhibitions, we feel confident in saying we have achieved our mission and now live it every day.

OUR TEAM

Michael Behlen: Founder and Publisher

Michael Behlen is an instant film addict and the founder and publisher of Analog Forever Magazine. He has self-published two Polaroid photobooks -“Searching for Stillness, Vol. 1” and “I Was a Pioneer,” literally a boxed set of his instant film work. His latest book, Searching for Stillness Vol II was published in 2020 by Static Age.

Behlen’s Polaroid photography can be found in various publications including Diffusion Magazine, Fraction Magazine, Seities Magazine, and Polaroid Now (Chronicle Books, 2021). He loves the magic sensuality of instant film: its saturated, surreal colors; the unpredictability of the medium; its addictive qualities as you watch it develop. He spends his time shooting instant film and backpacking in the California wilderness, usually a combination of the two.

Niniane Kelley: Writer and Curator

Niniane Kelley is a fine art photographer living and working in San Francisco and Lake County, California. A native of the Bay Area, she has a BFA in Photography from San Jose State University.

Drawn to photography for both the immediacy of the image making process and the intrinsic alchemy of the darkroom ritual, she crafts the majority of her imagery using traditional 19th century processes which give each piece its own unique character.

She has previously worked in fine art photography galleries and was a photographer and manager at the San Francisco tintype studio Photobooth. She teaches photography workshops in the Bay Area and surrounding environs.

Laura Barth: Digital Communications Consultant

Laura Barth is an artist, musician, and horticulturist currently living in the mountains of North Carolina. She works in the language of photography while incorporating multiple media in her images, including graphite, charcoal, watercolor and acrylic paints, block printing, and ephemeral botanical samples. Originally from the Midwest, Laura currently exhibits her work at Calendula gallery in St. Paul, MN and has had pieces published and exhibited across the country.

Laura became passionate about analog and instant photography because of its unique ability to capture moods, feelings, and memories, as well as the freedom it allows for creative experimentation, physical manipulation and incorporation of mixed media. She is drawn to intuitive and experimental approaches that create unpredictable results and imperfections in the final image, inviting the viewer to fill in the blanks with their own experiences.

Sam Sanders: Partnership Consultant

Sam Sanders is an experimental photographer who is currently based in Washington state. She delights in breaking the rules of her foundations in traditional photographic processes - inviting chance and embracing where things may go awry. She's enamored with the tangible and methodical nature of analog photography, yet the spontaneity of alternative printing processes like emulsion transfers and cyanotypes captivate her heart. Her focus is in blending medium format analog photography, experimental printing processes, and constructed image-making to create ephemeral and surreal works of art.

Sam received her BA in Interdisciplinary Art and Design with a focus in Photography at the Lamar Dodd School of Art (University of Georgia). Her work has been selected for exhibit in several galleries, as well as being featured in magazines and online exhibitions.
